How to settle on a size

Pin down three vehicle-side figures first
Before you start choosing, confirm the PCD (diameter of the circle through the bolt holes), the number of holes, and the centre bore. A wheel that does not match all three cannot physically go on, however much you like the look or the size. These are not on the registration document, so check the markings on the OE wheel or the vehicle data. If the wheel bore is larger than the hub, use hub rings to centre it.
Work outwards from the OE size
Take the OE diameter, rim width and inset as your baseline and decide how far to move from there. Change a lot at once and you get poke on the outside and interference on the inside at the same time. The reliable way is to move one thing at a time: keep the diameter and change only rim width, or keep the width and change only inset.
Narrow down by inset range first
The search lets you allow a range on inset. Around plus or minus 5 mm from OE rarely causes anything drastic and still leaves plenty of candidates. Widen the range too far and you start getting candidates that bolt on but rub on the outside or inside. Remember that half an inch more rim width also adds roughly 6.35 mm on each side.
Check brake clearance via disk type
Even with the inset right, the back of the spokes can catch the brake caliper. On multi-piece wheels, disk types differ in how they combine caliper clearance with rim depth. On a car with big calipers this is the first hurdle, so look at the differences between disk types in the knowledge base tab.
Nut seat shape and torque
Each wheel is designed for a particular nut seat shape — tapered, spherical or flat — and tightening with the wrong nut leads to nuts working loose or to damage. Get nuts that match the wheel, tighten to the specified torque in a criss-cross pattern, then check again after driving a while.

What is PCD? Typical examples by vehicle

PCD is the diameter of the circle through the bolt hole centers (in mm). Kei cars typically use 4H/100, most Japanese passenger cars 5H/114.3, and European cars often 112 or 120. It is fixed per vehicle — mismatched wheels won't bolt on.

How should I choose the offset (inset)?

Offset is the distance from the rim centerline to the mounting face; a lower value pushes the wheel outward. Staying within about ±5 mm of stock is a safe guide — watch fender and brake clearance, and measure carefully if you want a flush fitment.

What is the difference between 1-, 2-, and 3-piece wheels?

1-piece wheels are formed as a single unit: light, rigid, and relatively affordable. 2-piece wheels use a separate disk and rim, allowing millimeter-level offset tuning. 3-piece wheels combine inner barrel, outer lip, and disk — highly customizable and repairable, but pricier.
